immersion

MUSEUM OF VICTORIA

The studio investigated how information, object, space and phenomena can combine in the creation of engaging and compelling museum experiences. As a way of exercising their developing understanding of the creation of immersive museum environments, the students were firstly asked to develop a small ‘personal’ museum.

In this undertaking they investigated typologies of everyday objects and developed a curatorial position and methodology for collecting artefacts and information. The project asked, how can a designer engage personal and cultural memory through a curatorial process and how can an audience understand the meaning of objects through their relationship with other objects and their container.

Armed with this knowledge the students were invited to work on an exploratory project in partnership with the Museum of Victoria. The brief asked for the development of a proposal for a physical display system sited in the plaza forecourt of the museum and an accompanying online digital interface. The integrated design approach provided both an immersive and interactive environment for the appreciation of one object from the Melbourne Museum’s History and Technology collection.
