touchstones
CITY OF CASEY, MELBOURNE
The brief called for the design, fabrication and installation of an artwork that would play with the notion of poetics in public space and express public interaction in a physically experiential way.
Sited in the Selandra Rise Community Centre plaza, the artwork appears as a small outcrop of standing stones adjacent to the Centre’s entrance. Concealed beneath this rock formation was an electronic infrastructure, enabling a range of evolving and open ended interactions between the sculpture and the local residents.
The artwork expressed itself through a system which integrated sound and vibration emanating from the ground plane. These vibrational and acoustic events were triggered through the public’s interaction with a basalt sculptural elements which is inlaid with aluminum sensing strips. These personal interactions and the immediate responses of the artwork were recorded by the digital system and are stored in its burgeoning memory.
At dawn and dusk the artwork remembered the human interactions of the day and combines them into a celebratory composition of sound, vibration and light, creating unique affective spatial atmospheres each day within the forecourt of the community centre.
