NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AUSTRALIA
The brief from National Geographic sought to bring the company’s trademark yellow frame to life as a series of objects situated in retail stores across Australia. They considered the frame as a symbol of the power of science and research and how it can contribute to a more progressive and sustainable future.
In response to these ideals, the project team explored how data can be used to represent the relationship between humans and nature. Through the use of algorithmic based 3D modelling software, biodiversity information of different locations in Australia was by translated into unique surface patterns. The resulting portals that were generated through this process were then 3D printed from corn starch-based PLA and assembled as structures made up of cubic block units.
Ultimately the portals employed digital design and fabrication technologies to produce a series of iconic sculptural objects that expressed the geographic identity of where they were sited, while communicating the company’s vision of exploration, innovation and conservation.
