entropy

MYCELLIUM STUDIOS - MELBOURNE

The Entropy system enables the adaptation of sculptural form to be shaped in response to the spatial dynamics of specific architectural conditions. The project involved the development of a proprietary hardware system that facilitates the joining together of timber components into complex non-linear sculptural structures.

The design has been prototyped at various scales and in different situations. Variations of the composition of structure have been configured as free-standing sculptural entities, groupings and clusters of interlocking elements and suspended hanging nest-like assemblages.

Most recently the system was used in a collaborative work with SIAL Sound Studios, as armatures for the positioning of a 24-channel 3D immersive loudspeaker orchestra that was installed throughout the Mycelium Studios gallery space. The structures were configured to respond to the spatial environment and enabled the mounting of an array of speakers in a multitude of positions and angles. The system ensured that the audio was distributed in precise spatial patterns around the room allowing the soundscapes to move, evolve, and exist physically within the space.

The entropy project is ongoing, and is constantly seeking new collaborators, urban sites, spatial situations and cultural contexts in which to be deployed.
