CUSH CUSH GALLERY - BALI

The generation of the collection began through the production of a series of watercolour and oil pastel sketches of bowl-like forms that contemplated the idea of what constitutes a ‘vessel’. The shapes evolved from observations of the gentle curves and radii of the eroded geological forms found in streams and ocean rockpools. These studies sought to produce works that translated simple utilitarian functions into a metaphorical dimension.

The raw materials were local Indonesian timbers sourced from the offcuts of a larger furniture business. Each selected individual timber fragment became the starting point for the generation of a new form. Working in close collaboration with skilled Javanese craftsman the pieces took shape over a number of weeks. The finished collection acted as a rumination on the primal relationships between ritual and craft, a fusion of functional, sculptural, and material concerns.
