tyranny of distance
TOKYO DESIGNERS BLOCK + SEOUL DESIGN FESTIVAL
The Tyranny of Distance exhibition invited designers to submit works which had the potential to address both Australia's distance from International markets and the needs of modern urban lifestyles through the design of furniture, objects, clothing and appliances which reinvented the way we may inhabit domestic, urban and global space.
With the support of the Australia Council for the Arts, Austrade and the RMIT School of Architecture and Design, the RMIT Furniture Laboratory assembled a group of Australian Designers to exhibit works at Tokyo Designers Block and Seoul Design Festival.
The events represented major gatherings of the world's designers and design companies where thousands of local and international visitors gather to take part in a variety of exhibitions, installations and special events. The exhibition provided an opportunity for Australian designers to make vital links with designers, manufacturers and retailers from around the world and to develop an ongoing International identity and presence.
The exhibition featured designs which employed materials and manufacturing techniques in innovative ways and which communicated a cultural context inherently Australian while appealing to an international audience.
